Volunteering

Our Volunteer Support Workers (VSWs) are at the heart of our organisation, they choose to be with us to help people in their time of need. Full and free training is given by our experienced team. If you are interested in volunteering with us, take a look at what the role includes below:

  • Listening to people, without judgement or prejudice
  • Help understanding court language and court processes or remember what has been stated in the court room – in times of stress, people don’t always remember!
  • Assisting people facing problems or to come to terms with hard issues
  • Being a symbol of strength for people to lean on
  • Helping people to get their thoughts in order and make plans
  • Identifying needs, referring to other agencies if needed
  • Prayer, if someone requests prayer – we are happy to assist
  • Sitting with you in court, being a friendly face in the room

What our volunteers say about us

Below are some quotes from current and past volunteers.

Whilst studying law, I thought I knew quite a lot about the legal system. BCCS has shown me that it is about more than what is written in the textbooks.

Being a VSW at BCCS has helped me with my skills, I have never had a paid job and have been a homemaker for many years. The role has opened my eyes to the struggles other people face and how we can work together to help with current issues.

The team, paid and volunteers, are all like family. Everyone has time for each other and want each other to succeed. It is a fantastic place to volunteer. Latif and Kirsty are really lovely and I can’t thank them enough for all of their help.

Volunteering for BCCS Assist makes me feel human again, after being out of work for a long time I had lost myself. The staff and volunteers are so friendly and helpful. I am grateful to them all.
