About us

Why We are Here

The court environment can sometimes be very stressful – not only for those directly involved in hearings but also for their families and friends. It can make you feel alone, frightened or forgotten. BCCS “Assist” exists to bring kindness, hope and practical support into that space.

Bradford Court Chaplaincy Service (BCCS Assist) is a free, independent charity, giving support to all at court.

Whether you’re attending court as a defendant, witness, victim, family member, friend, or professional; we are here to ensure you are not alone during what can be a stressful and unfamiliar time.

We understand that court settings can often feel overwhelming. Our team is here to offer a calm, reassuring presence, helping you to prepare, listen to you, and respect your needs – no matter your background, beliefs, or circumstances.

Who We Are

We work alongside court services, legal professionals, community organisations, and support networks. We are committed to respecting and valuing every person we meet.

We offer practical and emotional support to people of all faiths and none.

Our trained staff and volunteers support individuals in distress, those wanting information or simply someone to talk to.

We offer an opportunity to think or talk things through in confidence and with no judgement.

What We Offer

A listening ear / safe space to talk about how you are feeling, before, during and after a court appearance; whether it is for yourself or someone you care about.

Support for people of all faiths or none, including time to think, write notes, pray, or simply being with you during a difficult time.

Help to find your way around, understand the court process and what is expected of you.

Come into court with you, so that you have a friendly face in the room and someone to explain what has been said afterwards. In times of stress, people don’t always listen to or understand what has been said.

You can speak to us in confidence; we will listen without judgement.

We will not share anything with the court, or anyone else, unless you ask us to.

We offer hope when things look as bad as they can possibly be, no matter what issues have brought you to court.

We can connect you and your family to other local support services including housing, health, mental wellbeing, faith communities and lots more.
